Ensure good corporate practices – Yamson urges business community
THE Chairman of Unilever Ghana Limited, Dr. Isamael Yamson, has called on corporate entities to ensure transparency and good governance to enhance their future sustainability.
He said operating a business on a sound basis meant that companies had to ensure that they abided by all regulations and good labour practices and relations to enable them to continue to be in business.
Dr. Yamson, who made this know at a networking cocktail on the Ghana Business Code, further stated that good corporate social responsibility went beyond public donations.
He said the Ghana Business Code had provided a good platform for business to ensure that they did business in the country in a sound manner, and called on businesses to sign up for the code.
Dr. Yamson, who is also the Board Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank, said the globalization of international market places an onerous task on businesses in the country to adopt to international standards to ensure that they become competitive.
That, he said, meant that businesses had to think differently to be innovative and creative, to ensure their future sustainability.
The President of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), Mr. Wilson Attah-Krofah, called for businesses to sign up to the code to ensure good business practice in the country.
The Ghana Business Code is a series of prescriptions based on the universal principles referred to in the United Nations Global Compact 10 principles relating to human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption.
It is intended to present best practices by adding requirements beyond core labour rights. Although not all human rights are covered, there is a continuous process of updating and refining the code on periodic revisions.
The Government of Denmark through its development agency, Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), is supporting the code.
